Barron Orange Lodge Supports Buddy Bear

Members of Barron Orange Lodge 627 shared an evening of good humour as they saw videos of the great work of the Buddy Bear Trust Conductive Education School in Dungannon in changing the lives of children suffering from cerebral palsy and motor disorders.

The members were able to see a promotional video made by Barbara McCann well known film maker containing extracts from comments of support made by Dr Paisley, Dominic Bradley, Gary McCausland- TV Presenter as it showed the development and changes of children who were unable to move independently when they came to the school to been able to walk unaided.

The members were particularly interested in the short focused comments made by First Minister Peter Robinson MLA as a child who was given little hope was able to take his first steps from his parent to Ildiko Veres his Principal Conductor who was especially trained in the world famous Peto Institute in Budapest.

Brendan McConville Chairman of the Trust thanked the members for not only raising the funds but for publicising their efforts as it in turn informed other parents that hope is available in Northern Ireland for children suffering from cerebral palsy.

Brendan praised the Lodge and its members for their Christian act of helping some of the most vulnerable children in Northern Ireland.  “I know that Orange Lodges work quietly to help those in need and tends to shy away from publicity but the generosity shown to the Buddy Bear Trust from many lodges who have raised funds to secure my oil painting of the Gathering at Dan Winters Cottage is something which should be publicised as it shows the other side of Orangism that is usually portrayed in the media.”

Brendan told the members that he had visited numerous Orange Lodges and had received the same traditional Irish welcome that is symbolic of Ireland.  It’s unfortunate that the positive work that the Orange Order carries out in supporting local communities and maintaining the various types of marching bands is not recognised as been part of our shared history and the fabric of our society.

The children at the Buddy Bear School come from all different types of political and religious backgrounds.  When we opened the independent school 20 years ago we did so against a background of great social and political unrest but we wanted parents and children to know that there was a safe haven for them and their children where they could be given every opportunity to realise their potential.  Our school is inspected like all other schools and it has received confirmation that it provides a good quality of education with an outstanding pastoral care underpinning the ethos.

We hope that many other lodges will raise funds and publicity to receive a hand embellished copy oil painting of Dan Winters Cottage which has been signed by Mr Edward Stevenson Grand Master of the Grand Orange Lodge, Mrs Olive Whitten of the Women’s Orange Lodge and Mrs Hilda Winters who manages the museum at Dan Winters Cottage in Loughall.

A great night’s craic was had by all.
