Our visit to Stormont this week has raised the profile of our children and Buddy Bear Trust

Some parents and pupils from the Buddy Bear Trust, along with Brendan McConville, Mary Murphy and Prinicpal Ildiko Veres visited Stormont this week to highlight the negative issues facing parents and children who want to attend the Buddy Bear Trust School.

Places in the School are being blocked by the Education Authority and some Parents are already involved in or are facing the prospect of long tribunals in the hope of getting their child placed in the Buddy Bear Trust School, to get the specialist education that will enhance and improve their child's development and quality of life.

We met with MLAs, all of the Teaching Unions and members of the Education Committiee, As a result of this visit, we recieved a letter from the Education Committiee stating:

"The Committee for Education undertakes a scrutiny and policy development

function with respect to the Department of Education and plays a key role in the

consideration and development of legislation. It generally does not deal with

individual schools, pupils or teachers etc.

Notwithstanding the above, Members expressed support for conductive

education. The Committee also agreed to write to the Department and the

Education Authority seeking clarification as to how they facilitate conductive

education and their policy position in respect of this and other school-based

therapies. The Committee also sought an update both in respect of the specific

ETI recommendation that co-operation between Buddy Bear and the nearest

Special School be encouraged and the Department’s / EA’s general policy

approach to co-operation between independent and Special Schools. "
